Outer Space History

Complications came with developing the film, there was hair, dirt weird coloring and other random effects that happened between taking the picture to when the picture was developed and scanned onto the computer. Maybe it was the very old film, or the old camera, maybe the people at Rite Aid are terrible at developing and put dirt into the negatives. There could be endless explanations, but the result came out to look like these fallowing photos.

I honestly really like them. The color makes them look vintage, from the 1960/70's, and the speckles makes them more unique and vintage like. Like they have been locked away in a box for many years causing them to fade and change color.
The process of taking these photos was a lot of fun, Vanessa and I left school for block D and headed to the beach. She was wearing my vintage (don't know what decade... a long time ago) dress, she has the absent gaze that i like in my photos, as well as the long willowy body. She also added a lot of insight of places on the beach we should go towards. We did not have a lot of time before we had to get back to school but it was  lot easier working with her then it was working with Raven on my last model shoot. She was very serious and no laughing, and listened to my direction (just what a photographer wants).
They may not have come out the way I intended, but I really like the end result.

I called this set outer space history because the photos were taken on a 35mm camera which made the photos look like they were captured in the 60/70's and because of something wrong with the film it caused discoloration, mostly red sparks, which reminded me and my teacher of aliens/mars and I combined the two theories and named this collection Outer Space History.

Through the Tunnel

A digital black and white photo of my fake aunts daughter. I really liked how the tunnel captured her face, the dark edges with it progressing light to this little girl. I just thought the overall shot was interesting and beautiful.

Old Fashion Photography

You know those pictures where no one is smiling, the old rustic shoots with the photographer hidden behind a black bag. Well I got to travel through time and try one of those cameras out. It took awhile figuring out the f shot and the exposure time for the shot, but it was fun. Leaning over this massive camera, hoping I'm pushing the right buttons is a thrilling experience. The shot I took was not the most exciting picture, seeing as it was just a shot out of the school window, but it was more about the learning process as well as the experience and knowledge that came with it.

The Camera was kinda of like this, the old accordion kind of style. The one I used was a little more modern then the one above, but the picture gives you the kind of idea.

My Camera is the Devil

My camera freaked out on me three times making me loose over 100 pictures. Well maybe it was my fault. The first time I rolled the cartridge up loaded my camera, took my 40 pictures and then went to developed it. Guess what it was all black, the film had been exposed. I guess someone (me) forgot to put the end cap on the cartridge. I was so mad, so I decided to leave my camera far away from me for a long time. When I finally realized those photos were gone and I needed to take some more I loaded my camera up and went to Virginia. I took amazing photos (i think) of old historical buildings, or random animals, I captured the world of the old south. But guess what, I had taken tons and tons of photos and I was wondering why it hadn't run out. I opened the back to check.. haha it had never caught on. So all those photos had never been taken. GRRR I give up on this 35mm camera.. I'm a digital girl. Okay one more try. Me and my friend, Vanessa went to the beach to take photos. She is my beautiful model... the light was perfect. But then the camera jammed... and ate my film... So I went back to the school threw my camera against wall (not really) grabbed and new one, and raced back to the beach. Now I'm waiting to see if this batch will come out. I have wasted so much time, so many photos. I'm depressed, but I'm going to give this black and white photography a piece of my mind and show it what I can do.!

Quick Trip Through The School

In the back hallway there were stacks of chairs, all at odd angles. To me it  looked like they were floating in thin air. The shadows cast against the wall and the angles made me take up my camera a shoot a picture. I wish the contrast was a little better, the dark is very dark and the white is not white enough. I wish the close up chair had a little more light. But when I was playing around with lighting on the computer it made the picture look fake and nasty. So I stayed to what the 35mm camera shot.

I poked my head into the ATV room and saw Erin sketching a drawing using the projector. With the dark room and the light projecting up against the wall I figured the picture would hold great contrast. I just saw it and wanted to take the photo.

Guitar

First day with 35mm camera. Only had about five pieces of film in the camera. I had to run around the school looking for some interesting shots.
As a photographer i enjoy taking close up shots of certain objects. I like the lines of the guitar and just the simplicity. The contrast is a little off on the photos, but I like how raw it looks.

Photograms

Playing with light and contrast was interesting, but my photos came out dull. I wanted something more exciting. I thought taking old film and twisting it to give a flowing edge would create an interesting photo. The light also captured my finger tips which when i placed the positive and negative next to each other they created the shape of a heart.

How to make a photogram:
Photograms are made by using an enlarger. You take unexposed paper place foreign objects on the sheet and then shine light. The light will create greys and darks depending on what it placed upon the paper. This image creates a negative, from there you will have to make a positive print.

 

This is one of my first photogram negatives. You can tell that the light may have been on to long, the other objects in the background of by blacked out.  I really liked the necklace that I used, there was chaining, harsh but also elegant. I like playing with objects that can represent two different extremes. Unfortunately this extreme did not come out to what I wanted. I had a glass bottle, which I wished reflected light more. At least I knew what I wanted... which was not this.

 I started to play with film. It had a story a character and with the bottle it caused deformity. Now looking back at it, it isn't my favorite, but I am happy that I played with film negatives in my photograms. There also is a ghostly figure to the left side, which is medical glove. I liked how simple objects around the room could make an interesting object.

There were some overhead pictures that I found floating around the art wing. In the end it is not much work, you put it in the enlarger place a couple random objects, shine the light through, and bam you got it. To me it looks like that as well... haha I am so over critical of my work. Nothing is good. I learned that you can have fun with photograms but I like capturing real life. I would mind taking a real life photo and then playing around with that object in the enlarger. That may me my next adventure.

The picture that inspired it all

I took a photography class my freshman year of high school, this is one of my favorite pieces. I loved playing with contrast and I loved eyes. So I put black make up on my left eye with white mascara and then heavy black mascara on my right eye. The line down the middle of my face is not the best but the idea came through. I based my freshman collection off of this piece. I named the photo Looking Through My Eyes. I have named my collection of pieces the same because I though it was appropriate due to the fact that I am capturing photos from my prospective... through my eyes.

The Story of My Life

I'm in my final semester of high school and ready to explore. Mostly I am an over achiever, always taking the hardest classes, filling my plate up to the top with activities and clubs. The last four years have been hard, I have pushed myself to prove to everyone that I can do anything. I took all honors classes, joined endless amounts of clubs, played three sports a year and in the summer I worked sixty-seventy hour weeks. I lost myself in the endless amount of doing. So when I started applying to colleges and they asked me “What are your passions?” I froze. I thought for hours, what did I love? I had to look back to when I was a child. I realized I loved to capture culture through my lens. It stated when I was eight. My family and I traveled to Seattle Washington for a wedding. I bought six disposable cameras and used them all in the first several days. I would spend hours bending down to get the perfect angle to capture the bug or the wind blown trees. Ever since then I always had a camera, snapping photos here and there. In the seventh grade I traveled to Mexico. Capturing the street venders and the Mayan ruins were fascinating. I wanted to learn about the natives and the history behind the ruins. While last year I was privileged to travel to Ecuador, there I was allowed to take photos of a native Achuar settlement, a culture mostly untouched by the outside world. All these experience made me realize I would love to travel and be able to capture a life that is unknown to me. To answer the colleges questions what lights my fire? Discovering culture and the diversity all around our world through my lens. So about me, I’m an overachiever trying to capture the simplicity of the world around me.

Vintage Black and White

 Photography has been a small hobby of mine, taking snap shots of trees and sunsets. People were always hard for me to capture. Everything has to be right, the angles,  textures and the shape, all have to be working with the background and the model. I wanted to capture elegance and the simplicity. So I gathered one of my vintage dresses, styled my friends hair and started snapping photos with my Nikon. As you can see capturing a face is still a little intimidating to me, the expression has to be just right. And when your working with your friend who is laughing and is embarrassed of the whole situation, I decided focusing on the body and the background would be ideal. + It was a very cold day !
All in all we had fun with this photo shot and there were a lot of photos that were just terrible, but it was entertaining and interesting to realize the shot also really depends on the model and the light.
